Short description of areas to be visited:

The Victoria Falls…described as one of the 7 wonders of the world… the greatest known ‘curtain of falling water’. About 540 million cubic metres (end of March) of Zambezi water per minute fall down over the edge, over a width of 1.8 kilometers, to a depth of about 100 metres below. At whatever part one looks, the rays of the sun shining on the descending masses of foam, form a double zone of prismatic colors, of whose depth and brilliancy no one, who has only seen the faint tints of an ordinary rainbow, can form any conception. The moving water creates a number of activities in the area like sightseeing by air (helicopter and micro light), wild water rafting (Zambia’s Rafting Adventures have been rated as one of the top ten travel experiences in the world), canoeing, walks, bungy jumping… but also walking safaris, birding safaris, elephant back safaris, walking with lions, etc.

South Luangwa…according to a lot of experienced safari enthusiasts, to be considered as one of the greatest wildlife areas in Africa. The concentration of game around the Luangwa River is relatively high. The park hosts over 40 mammals and over 400 bird species. The park has a stunning ever-changing scenery, from open bushveld to the denser shrubs and bushes. A number of people favour the dry winter months when the concentration of animals is the highest near the river, but even during the emerald season a lot of animals are around and you can enjoy true remote Africa as the Luangwa Valley is less visited between November and March. The Luangwa has the highest concentration of hippos, crocodiles and leopards than anywhere else in Africa.

The Thornicroft giraffe, only found in the Valley, is easy to be seen. The legendary walking safaris were originated in South Luangwa and a must to do, as this is the best experience to use your primitive senses in the bush.

Itinerary:

Day 1:

Chundukwa_1

Chundukwa Lodge

After arriving at Lusaka, you catch the Proflight connection for Livingstone. You are met on arrival and have a short drive to Chundukwa River Lodge. This refined lodge is surrounded by nature on the Zambezi river, far from the noise and bustle of the Falls. It’s a great spot to relax after a long flight. You’re very likely to have the visit of some of the ‘big five’ from the surrounding district. If you like fishing, then Zambezi provides great opportunity. The ultimate challenge is to catch a big tiger fish on your line and to try to reel in and land it ashore.

The chalets are splendidly equipped with bathrooms en suite. As the choice of activities in this region is so large, we leave it to you to fix your own personal day schedule. The lodge is also equipped for children, with a number of exciting activities to be booked. During your stay at Chundukwa, a sunset cruise and a day trip to the Falls are included in the price.

Day 2-4:

Livingstone – Chundukwa River Lodge

CHUNDUKWA_4

Chundukwa Lodge

For the three following days, you can take part in a wide choice of activities to be booked at the lodge. You can discuss different possibilities with your host and book them directly while there.

The lodge has a magnificent view over the Zambezi river and a swimming pool with sundeck, which is ideal to relax agreeably between activities. If you already feel in the mood for a safari, you can join a game drive through the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. This is actually one of the few places in Zambia where you can see rhinoceros.

Day 5:

Livingstone – Lusaka – South Luangwa

Chalet_TandT_2

Track and Trail River Camp

You are driven to Livingstone Airport and then take a Proflight connection to Mfuwe aerodrome, where a Track & Trail Rivercamp chauffeur will welcome you at the small reception hall. After a short drive through the centre of Mfuwe village, you arrive at the lodge some 45 minutes later. Having had two short flights during the day, it’s up to you to decide if you have sufficient energy and will enough for an evening safari that sets off at about 4 p.m.

Day 6-10:

South Luangwa National Park

Bathroom_Chalet_TandT

Track and Trail River Lodge

Every day it’s possible to book a different safari leaving from the lodge. At sunrise or sunset, you join extensive safaris through the National Park, accompanied by an experienced guide. We try to leave with you as early as possible after sunrise, to be first for the bush adventure. For photo enthusiasts and birdwatchers, the early hours are the most important, as that’s when the light is most beautiful and nature is unruffled by the wind, so that – among other things – bird calls are enhanced. The evening is the most suitable time to go looking for Luangwa predators. Together with a spotter and professional guide, you have the best chance to see a hunting leopard. Halfway through the safari, we take time to watch the sun go down over the river, in a truly magical atmosphere….together with a well-deserved drink.

An alternative to the safaris is a cultural visit to Kawaza village. We make our way to a nearby village where you get a good idea what everyday life is like in this part of Africa. This excursion is particularly recommended for families with children.

The Mosi-O-Tunya National Park is situated along the upper Zambezi, stretching from and including the Vic Falls for about 12kms up the Zambezi River above the Falls.

It is only 66 square kilometers but there are plans to extend the park further up river. Because the park is small, it affords a wonderfully relaxing drive alongside the river for much of the circular route and the wide variety of species can be easily seen. One can take a pleasant drive around the park in a couple of hours and all the species can be seen at close range. Since there are no predators, the animals are very relaxed and afford some excellent photo opportunities.
