To locate us & for some useful information on going on safari in Zambia.

What to bring

Generally, casual comfortable light clothing in neutral colours is suitable throughout the year. Our list of practical items to pack for safari would include:

  • Light cotton tops and trousers
  • T-shirts and shorts or skirt
  • Jeans or safari trousers for evenings and cooler days
  • Shirts with long sleeves (even in summer, they will protect you from the sun and from mosquitoes)
  • A windbreaker and fleece for early morning and evening game drives
  • Warm clothing for cool winter evenings (June/July)
  • Compact raincoat during the rainy months (Late November/April)
  • Comfortable (worn in) walking shoes
  • Sandals for relaxing around the lodge
  • Hat, sunblock and sunglasses
  • Moisturiser and lip cream
  • Swimwear
  • Insect repellent
  • Binoculars
  • Camera with plenty of film/ digital memory cards & spare batteries
  • Basic medical kit (aspirins, plasters, Imodium, antiseptic cream and Anti-histamine cream etc)
  • Anti-malarial tablets are essential all year round (consult your doctor)
  • Torch
  • Multi-plug adaptor (three pin square British style plug is used in Zambia)
  • If you wear contact lenses, we recommend that you bring along a pair of glasses in case you get irritation from the dust

When to come

Zambia has three distinct seasons:

Generally, the temperatures in South Luangwa are a few degrees higher than neighbouring towns as the park is situated in a valley.

The winter months (April - September) are the best for spotting game. During these months water is restricted to rivers and waterholes, where the wildlife congregates. Visibility is also good as vegetation is less dense. Summer (October to March) is lovely due to the rains - everything is lush and green, and the birding is excellent. November and December are the calving months.

Walking safaris only take place between June and October.

Currency

The currency is Zambian Kwacha

US dollars are accepted in most places and are required for visas and other taxes. Be sure to bring notes with ‘large heads’ – small heads are not accepted anywhere in Zambia.

Airport transfers are US$ 20 p.p. each way.

Visa

Visas are a requirement for most foreign passports holders.

We can assist you with a visa waiver if you have booked a stay from outside Zambia.

Specify on your booking the need for a visa waiver, your full names (as written in your passport), nationality and passport number. We will contact the immigration office and give them full details up front.

Please note that the immigration office need at least 7 days notice to arrange this visa waiver.

Malaria

Track & Trail River Camp is in a malaria area but malaria is easily avoided if you take the necessary precautions. Contact your doctor for information on precautionary measures.

Our guests' safety is of the utmost importance: all guides have advanced first aid training and the camp has a full medical kit on hand.

Game viewing activities

Track & Trail River Camp arranges guided game viewing activities in the National Park, with licensed Safari Guides. Day and Night Drives and Walking Safaris are available.

Morning drives 06.00 - 10.00 hours
Night drives      16.00 - 20.00 hours

*Private vehicles may enter the Park from 0600-1800 hours daily.

Communications

We have an independent satellite broadband connection to the internet which allows us reasonably fast connection from 07.00-20.00hrs, during which time computers are available for internet use at USD$1 for 15 minutes.
