Morning game drives

Watch the bush awaken during your morning drive and look out for Elephants crossing the Luangwa river or admire the colorful birdlife. Your safari guide will teach you all about the fascinating flora and fauna around you. While you listen to the sounds of the bush your safari guide will use his tracking skills following footprints of nocturnal animals returning home after a nights hunt making your morning drive a soothing and exciting experience at the same time.

Morning drives are from 06.00-10.00hrs, in between to stretch your legs while having a tea/coffee break with homemade snack.

Night game drives

One of Luangwa´s highlights is a night drive looking for nocturnal animals like: lion, leopard, hyena, mongoose, owl, civet, bush baby and genet.
Watch the famous Luangwa sunset while having a sundowner drink and homemade snack. And as darkness falls the safari will continue using a spotlight. Our experienced spotter that accompanies the safari guide is skilled to find nocturnal animals. By the color of the reflecting eye, the blinking of the eye or the height of the eye from the ground up he knows what kind of animal he is dealing with and with some luck you might even come across a hunting leopard!

Night drives are from 15.30-19.30hrs, during the hottest months of the season we start off half an hour later.

Exploring at night

South Luangwa is one of the few places were you can do a night drive.
They offer an unique insight into the world of predators and other elusive nocturnal animals that seldom come out in daylight.
There are two types of light-receptor cells in the eye: light-sensitive rods, and colour-sensitive cones.
Most mammals have more rods and fewer cones than humans do. This means that their eyes are more sensitive to light and have better vision in low light conditions.

Why we use a red-light filter on our spotlight when we see a predator hunting. When faced with artificial light for which they’re not prepared, light-sensitive animals are effectively blinded, leaving them unable to function properly. Most animals cannot see colors and are unable to see the color red, By using the red-light filter, the spotlight does not interfere during the hunt.

From a photographic point of view, it’s not the best to see the animals in red, but we have to respect nature without the least possible harassment. In any picture post processing software you can filter out the red and you will have a stunning black and white picture.

Not only to see the African eco system, but also to smell, feel, touch and hear the African wilderness. A walking safari is a perfect opportunity to experience that ‘up close and personal feeling’.
